On 24 November, the European Union launched an online reporting tool that allows citizens to report suspected violations of the AI Actin a fully anonymous and secure manner. This regulation, which entered into force a few months before the platform was launched, aims to strike a balance between innovation and safety by strictly regulating the use of artificial intelligence systems within the EU.

This mechanism, available in all official languages of the European Union, is primarily intended for employees, former employees, self-employed collaborators, shareholders, or members of company management using AI, enabling them to report practices deemed non-compliant — with the option to attach supporting documents.

Anonymous citizen vigilance

The platform functions like a “secure mailbox”. Through this interface, anyone can now report abuses involving an AI system (privacy violations, security issues, bias and discrimination, etc.) while remaining completely anonymous. It also enables secure communication between the European AI Office, which centralizes and analyses reports, and the whistleblower. The whistleblower can also respond to requests for clarification while remaining anonymous.

Although whistleblower confidentiality is already guaranteed, the specific legal protection provided for in the European directive on whistleblowers will only begin applying to AI-related reports starting 2 August 2026. Until then, confidentiality remains the main means of protection against potential retaliation, even if certain reports related to product safety, consumer protection, or privacy may already benefit from legal protection.
