Mozilla Highlights Article 6 of the French Bill Aiming to Secure and Regulate the Digital Space (SREN)

The NGO Mozilla, advocate for an open and free web and the creator and maintainer of the Firefox browser, alerts about the French bill SREN (Secure and Regulate the Digital Space). This text, presented to the parliament just before the summer holidays, was adopted in the first reading at the Senate on July 5th and is currently in an accelerated procedure.

More specifically, Mozilla underscores the problematic nature of article 6 of the bill. This article states that the French state, through the CNIL, can issue an alert regarding a specific website. Browsers will then have to display the alert in question (risk of fraud, data theft, etc.) on the concerned sites. The state will also be able to request browsers to block access to targeted sites, without allowing internet users to continue their browsing.

In this context, Mozilla sounds the alarm regarding the risk of state-imposed web censorship. With the potential to set a precedent for other governments. In response, the NGO has launched its online petition.
